Conservation, in Piaget's Concrete Operational Stage (ages 7-11), refers to the understanding that the quantity of a substance or object remains the same even when its appearance changes. For example, a child understands that the amount of liquid stays the same whether it is poured into a tall, thin glass or a short, wide one.
