833 Glossary 1/5

Glossary

Channel 1/4-inch jack

  • A controllable and routable mixer slot for audio inputs.

  • Commonly used analog audio connector for both inputs and outputs.

  • TRS (tip-ring-sleeve) version can be a balanced or two-channel connection.

  • Typically wired as TRS for headphones.

Channel Grouping

  • Allows grouping of the 8 channels in the 833 mixer.

  • Enables simultaneous control of faders, record arming, and mute states.

  • Serves as an alternative to sending channels to a bus.

3.5 mm jack

  • A small-format audio connector, often used for headphones.

  • Commonly handles -10 dBV signals, suitable for portable audio devices.

Advanced Audio Coding (AAC)

  • An audio coding standard for lossy digital audio compression.

  • Seen as a successor to MP3, provides better sound quality at the same bitrate.

Circled Take

  • Identified by the @ symbol in file names.

  • Used to highlight either good takes or tracks/takes to be ignored.

AES3

  • Standard for digital audio signal exchange between professional devices.

  • Can carry two channels of PCM audio over balanced 110 ohm connections using XLR-3 cables.

Com Return

  • A dedicated audio input for receiving signals from a PL (private line) communications circuit.

  • In the 833 mixer, the com return can route to an output or bus.

AES42

  • Digital interface protocol for microphones.

  • Microphones following this standard output digital audio via XLR, requiring external power.

dBFS

  • Measurement of digital signal levels, expressed in dB relative to full scale.

  • Maximum signal level is 0 dBFS; negative values represent signal strength.

  • It does not correspond to analog signals unless their relationship is known.

Bext Chunk

  • Broadcast WAV extension that adds metadata like timecode and user bits to WAV files.

  • Information ignored by systems that don't recognize the bext chunk.

Delay (Channel)

  • Time delay that can be added to individual channels in milliseconds.

  • Useful for compensating differences in arrival times of audio signals.

Bit Depth

  • Indicates the resolution of audio amplitude, measured in bits.

  • Higher bit depths allow finer distinctions in amplitude, affecting the dynamic range.

  • Standard for audio production is 24-bit with a maximum dynamic range of 144 dB.

Dugan Automix

  • Automatic mixing algorithm developed by Dan Dugan.

  • Prioritizes active speech channels while reducing levels of unused signals for improved audio quality.

Broadcast WAV (BWAV)

  • WAV files with additional non-audio metadata, such as timecode support.

exFAT

  • Storage volume format compatible with current versions of MacOS and Windows.

  • Supports large volume and file sizes, accommodating up to 128 PB volumes and 16 EB files.

Bus

  • An audio path designated for one or multiple channels (mixed).

  • Typically routed to an output, a record track, or both.

Camera Return

  • An audio input designed for receiving the camera's output (like headphone output).

  • Allows for monitoring the signal quality at the camera.

  • Aux In can be utilized as a source for any channel in the 833 mixer.

Fader

  • Control element on a mixing console for adjusting channel levels to a bus.

  • Can be rotary or sliding potentiometers, typically offering more attenuation than gain.
