Modern World History – Ohio’s New Learning Standards

  1. Historical events provide opportunities to examine alternative courses of action.

  2. The use of primary and secondary sources of information includes an examination of the credibility of each source.

  3. Historians develop theses and use evidence to support or refute positions.

  4. Historians analyze cause, effect, sequence and correlation in historical events, including multiple causation and long- and short-term causal relations.

13. Advances in technology, communication and transportation improved lives, but also had negative consequences

14. The causes of World War I included militarism, imperialism, nationalism and alliances. (and the political developments that put Europe in the state of conflict)

15. The consequences of World War I and the worldwide depression set the stage for the Russian Revolution, the rise of totalitarianism, aggressive Axis expansion and the policy of appeasement, which in turn led to World War II.


The following list describes the learning targets for the assessment on Unit 6.  The content you learn during this unit will coincide with the following learning targets.  Quiz and test questions are based upon the understanding of these learning targets.  On a daily basis please review, write responses and self-assess your own understanding of these learning targets.   




Learning Targets


  1. Identify and explain the four long term causes and one short term cause of WWI.


  1. Describe the differing perspectives of the following nations and explain the events that led to their entrance into WWI (Austria-Hungary, Serbia, Russia, Germany, France, Belgium, and Great Britain).


  1. Explain the various war plans of France (Plan XVII), Germany (Schlieffen Plan & Unrestricted Submarine Warfare), Great Britain (Blockade), and Russia (Plan XIX) and evaluate their degree of success.


  1. Identify and explain the impact of new technology and strategies of warfare during WWI.


  1. Describe the human costs of war including the perspective of soldiers fighting, impact on civilians, multicultural involvement in the war, etc.


  1. Identify and explain the reasons why the United States entered WWI and the role they played in the Allied victory (be sure to include the Zimmermann Note).


  1. Describe the impact of propaganda in terms of how it can shape public opinion.


  1. Explain why Russia withdrew from the war before it was over.  What impact did this have on the war?


  1. Describe the peace process following WWI (armistice, Big Four, desires nations/leaders had following the war, Paris Peace Conference, Fourteen Points).


  1. Identify and describe the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles against Germany


  1. Evaluate the effectiveness of the Treaty of Versailles and describe how it impacted the world following WWI, (changes to the map of Europe, Germany, creation of the League of Nations, self-determination, views of war).


  1. Describe the causes and effects of the Armenian Genocide


  1. Describe the causes and effects of the February/March Revolution in Russia (Democratic).


  1. Describe the causes and effects of the October/November Revolution in Russia (Communist).


  1. Describe the importance of the following people/groups during the Russian Revolution: Tsar Nicholas II, Vladimir Lenin, Bolsheviks


  1. Describe the causes and effects of the Russian Civil War.
