List the divisions of the nervous system, and describe the characteristics of each
CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
- composed of the brain and spinal cord
PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
- communication link between CNS and various parts of the body
- the information is delivered to and from the CNS to the various parts of the body thru PNS
- composed of all nervous tissue outside of the CNS, including ganglia and nerves
SENSORY DIVISION OF THE PNS
- also known as the afferent (towards) division
- from body to the CNS
- Neurons that transmit action potential from PNS to CNS are called sensory neurons
MOTOR DIVISION OF THE PNS
- also known as efferent (away) division
- from CNS to the body
- Neurons the transmit action potential from CNS to PNS are called motor neurons
