NERVOUS SYSTEM

List the divisions of the nervous system, and describe the characteristics of each

CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM

  • composed of the brain and spinal cord

PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM

  • communication link between CNS and various parts of the body
  • the information is delivered to and from the CNS to the various parts of the body thru PNS
  • composed of all nervous tissue outside of the CNS, including ganglia and nerves

SENSORY DIVISION OF THE PNS

  • also known as the afferent (towards) division
  • from body to the CNS
  • Neurons that transmit action potential from PNS to CNS are called sensory neurons

MOTOR DIVISION OF THE PNS

  • also known as efferent (away) division
  • from CNS to the body
  • Neurons the transmit action potential from CNS to PNS are called motor neurons
