THE PARTS OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

- Nose
- Main organ where air enters and is filtered
- Nasal cavity
- Humidifies and warms the inspired air
- Removes debris/airborne particles
- Pharynx
- Receives air from the nasal cavity and air, food, and water from the oral cavity
- Larynx
- Also known as the voice box
- Protects lower respiratory tract from getting food into the trachea while breathing
- Trachea
- Empty tube which is separated into two branches that serve as passageway of air into the lungs
- Bronchi (Bronchus)
- Branching tubes
- Bronchioles
- Hair-like tubes entering each lung
- Alveoli
- Air sacs
- Bubble-like branch structures connected to the bronchioles
- Exchanging of gases
- Lungs
- Allows oxygen in the air to be taken into the body, while also letting the body get rid of carbon dioxide in the air breathed out
- Diaphragm
- Primary muscle used in respiration
- Contracts as you breathe in and out
