Earth's Natural Resources
Natural Resources - These are materials gathered from nature that humans use to survive and satisfy their needs
Earth Natural Resources - Earth is made up of land, water, and air, where the land part is composed mainly of soil, rocks, and underground deposits of coal minerals, and other fuels
Natural Resources - water, soil, rock, and fuel
Two Types of Natural Resources: -
-Renewable Resources - that can grow again or can be replaced after it is consumed
Ex: Sun, Plants, Water, Animals, etc
-Non-renewable - Resources that cannot be replaced once consumed
Ex: Minerals, Soil, Coal, Fuel, Natural Gas, etc
Sustainability - Sustainability is the practice of using the Earth’s resources in a responsible manner that will allow the resources to be available for the present and future generations.
Soil - The top layer of the earth’s crust which composed of minerals, organic matter, and water
- Important Of the Soil:
Farming
Used as underground or foundation for construction
Water - Covers 70% of the earth’s surface
Three types of water:
- Fresh
- Salty
- Ground Water
Rocks - Used by people in the construction of houses, infrastructures and making jewelry
Fossil Fuel - formed from the remains of dead animals and plants
Coal - most common type of fossil fuel
- considered as the most dangerous fossil fuel on earth because of the danger involved in mining
How to use Earth’s resources sustainably:
Soil:
Crop rotation
Composting
No-till farming
Planting cover crops
Using organic fertilizers
Mulching
Terracing on slopes
Water conservation techniques
Soil erosion prevention
Agroforestry techniques
Water:
Reduce water waste by fixing leaks
Use water-efficient appliances
Collect rainwater for gardening
Take shorter showers
Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth
Water plants in the early morning or late evening
Use a broom instead of a hose to clean driveways
Install a low-flow showerhead
Only run the dishwasher and washing machine with full loads
Avoid watering the lawn during the hottest part of the day
Rock:
Create rock gardens with native plants
Use rocks for erosion control in landscaping
Build retaining walls with rocks
Use rocks for natural pathways in gardens
Incorporate rocks into art and sculptures
Use rocks for water filtration systems
Utilize rocks for building materials in construction
Use rocks for heat retention in greenhouses
Create natural seating areas with rocks
Use rocks for natural borders in landscaping
Fuel:
Drive at a steady speed
Keep tires properly inflated
Avoid excessive idling
Combine errands into one trip
Use public transportation or carpool
Maintain a well-tuned engine
Remove excess weight from the vehicle
Avoid aggressive driving habits
Use cruise control on highways
Plan routes to avoid traffic congestion
Use non needed vehicles(cars, vans and etc.)
Solar energy
Hydroelectric energy
Wind energy
