Week 11 - ASE101 Assessment Task Overview

Last Assessment Task: Research and Writing Exercise

  • Worth 30% of the final grade.

  • A mini community data report using Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Census Data.

  • Select a postcode and two key demographic factors (e.g., religious affiliation, method of travel to work, income, cultural diversity, housing type, marital status).

  • Create two visual representations of the data.

  • Analyze how these factors influence community identity and lifestyle.

  • Word Limit: 800 words (strict) + data visualizations.

  • Two presentation options:

    • Traditional Word document report.

    • PowerPoint presentation with voice-over.

Task Steps

  • Choose a postcode of interest (your own or one you'd like to explore).

  • Gather data from the ABS census data portal.

  • Refer to Andrew's video for specific instructions on finding statistics and creating visualizations.

  • Create two charts (e.g., bar charts, pie charts).

  • Compare the postcode's data with state (Victorian) and national figures.

  • Label visualizations as Figure 1 and Figure 2.

  • Analyze how demographic characteristics influence community identity and lifestyle using specific examples and considering social factors.

Traditional Report Structure

  • Introduction (100 words)

    • Introduce the chosen postcode and the two demographics.

    • Explain why that location was chosen.

  • Data Visualizations

    • Insert two data visualizations (charts/graphs).

    • Descriptive analysis of key differences and patterns in each visualization.

  • Community Analysis (400 words)

    • Reflect on how the chosen factors shape lifestyle and community experience in the selected postcode.

    • Consider how these characteristics influence the feeling of living in the community.

    • Discuss how cultural, social, or religious differences create unique local identity.

    • Analyze how factors practically impact living experiences (e.g., public transport reliance leading to walkable communities).

  • Conclusion (100 words)

    • Reflect on what the findings reveal about the unique character and lived experience of the chosen postcode.

  • Choose demographics with around 4-5 variables for easier presentation and analysis.

Additional Tips

  • Be practical and specific; focus on real-life impacts.

  • Avoid broad, flowery generalizations.

Example Data Visualization

  • Comparison of religious affiliation in Australia, Victoria, and a chosen postcode (e.g., Fitzroy).

AI Statement

  • Required for the assessment, as with all other assessments in the unit.

  • If AI is used:

    • Specify the tool, version, date, and how it was used.

  • If AI is not used:

    • Include a statement confirming that the work is original and no AI assistance was utilized.

  • Place the AI statement at the end of the assignment.

PowerPoint Presentation Alternative

  • Create a PowerPoint presentation (5 slides total) instead of a written report.

  • Embed recorded audio commentary using PowerPoint's built-in feature.

  • Follow the same structure as the traditional report but in a slideshow format.

  • Do not use Keynote or other presentation softwares due to compatibility issues with the submission system.

Q&A Highlights

  • Real-life impact examples should draw on lived experiences within the community.

  • Anecdotal evidence from community members can be included.

  • Referencing is not required; focus is on personal observation and analysis.

  • Comparisons should be made to state (Victoria) and national figures.

  • It is acceptable to use a postcode outside of Victoria.
