MODULE 5: Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
I. Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)
Established in 2000, the MDGs aimed to tackle global issues such as poverty.
Replaced by the SDGs in 2015.
MDGs included:
Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
Achieve universal primary education
Promote gender equality and empower women
Reduce child mortality
Improve maternal health
Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases
Ensure environmental sustainability
Develop a global partnership for development
II. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Their 169 Targets
The SDGs are 17 goals created by the United Nations to be accomplished by 2030, each with specific targets addressing global challenges.
1. No Poverty
Aim: End poverty in all forms everywhere.
Targets:
1.1 Eradicate extreme poverty for all.
1.2 Halve the proportion of people living in poverty.
1.3 Implement social protection systems.
1.4 Ensure equal access to economic resources.
1.5 Build resilience of the poor against disasters.
1.a Mobilize resources to end poverty.
1.b Create supportive policy frameworks for poverty reduction.

2. Zero Hunger
Aim: End hunger and achieve food security.
Targets:
2.1 Ensure access to food.
2.2 End malnutrition.
2.3 Double agricultural productivity.
2.4 Ensure sustainable food production.
2.5 Maintain genetic diversity.
2.a Increase investment in rural infrastructure.
2.b Resolve trade restrictions in agricultural markets.
2.c Ensure proper functioning of food markets.

3. Good Health and Well-being
Aim: Ensure healthy lives for all ages.
Targets:
3.1 Reduce maternal mortality.

3.3 End epidemics of diseases (e.g., AIDS).
3.4 Reduce mortality from non-communicable diseases.
3.5 Strengthen substance abuse prevention and treatment.
3.6 Halve deaths from road traffic accidents.
3.7 Ensure universal access to reproductive healthcare.
3.8 Achieve universal health coverage.
3.9 Reduce health issues from pollution.
3.a Strengthen WHO Tobacco Control.
3.b Support research for vaccines and medicines.
3.c Increase health financing and workforce development.
3.d Enhance global health risk early warning systems.

4. Quality Education
Aim: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all.

4.3 Ensure access to affordable technical and tertiary education.
4.4 Increase relevant skills for employment.
4.5 Eliminate gender disparities in education.
4.6 Ensure literacy and numeracy for youth and adults.
4.7 Equip learners with sustainable development knowledge.
4.a Upgrade educational facilities.
4.b Expand scholarships for developing countries.
4.c Increase supply of qualified teachers.

5.5 Ensure women's participation in leadership.
5.6 Guarantee access to reproductive health rights.

Aim: Promote peaceful societies.

17. Partnerships for the Goals
Aim: Revitalize global partnerships for sustainable development.
Targets:
17.1 Mobilize domestic resources.
