Communicative Competence and the Functions of Language
Linguistic and Sociolinguistic Competence
Kakayahang Lingguwistiko, or Linguistic Competence, refers to an individual's mastery over the structural components of a language. This includes the correct use of grammar, accurate spelling, and the proper application of bantas or punctuation. Having this competence ensures that the technical aspects of communication are followed strictly to convey clear meaning within the rules of the language.
Kakayahang Sosyolingguwistiko, or Sociolinguistic Competence, refers to the ability to communicate appropriately according to the social context of the situation. This involves understanding how to adjust language based on various environmental and social factors. This specific competence is often analyzed through the S.P.E.A.K.I.N.G. framework developed by Dell Hymes.
The S.P.E.A.K.I.N.G. Framework by Dell Hymes
The S.P.E.A.K.I.N.G. model serves as a guide to understanding the various components that determine how communication should occur in a given context. Each letter in the acronym represents a specific factor that a sociolinguistically competent speaker must consider.
S stands for Setting, which refers to where the conversation is taking place (Saan nag-uusap?). The physical or social location significantly influences the formality and style of the interaction.
P stands for Participants, identifying who is involved in the conversation (Sino ang kausap?). This determines the level of respect or familiarity required, such as whether one is speaking to a teacher ba o tropa (to a teacher or to a group of friends).
E stands for Ends, which focuses on the objective or goal of the communication (Ano ang layunin?). Knowing the goal helps the speaker choose the right words to achieve their intended outcome.
A stands for Act Sequence, referring to the flow or progress of the conversation (Paano ang takbo ng usapan?). This looks at how the interaction begins, progresses, and ends naturally.
K stands for Keys, which determines the tone of the interaction (Ano ang tono?). The speaker must decide if the situation requires them to be seryoso (serious) or if they are just nagbibiro (joking).
I stands for Instrumentalities, which identifies the medium or channel used for communication (Ano ang medium?). This identifies whether the message is being delivered through pasulat (writing) or pasalita (speaking).
N stands for Norms, referring to the social rules or acceptable topics within a specific conversation (Ano ang paksa na katanggap-tanggap?). This governs what can and cannot be talked about in a particular social setting.
G stands for Genre, which classifies the type of discourse being used. For example, it determines whether the speaker is nagsasalaysay (narrating/telling a story) or nagtatalo (debating/arguing).
Functional Uses of Language for Information and Creativity
Language serves various cognitive and social functions, ranging from the search for knowledge to the expression of the imagination. These functions categorize how humans use language to interact with information and the world.
Heuristiko is the function of language used primarily in the search for information or the acquisition of knowledge. Practical applications of this function include pagtatanong (asking questions), conducting an interview, or engaging in pananaliksik (research).
Impormatibo or Representasyonal is the function of language used to provide information or data to others. Examples of this function in action include pagbabalita sa TV (news broadcasting on television) or pagtuturo ng guro (a teacher teaching lessons in a classroom).
Imahinatibo refers to the creative use of language to express artistic ideas or create fictional worlds. This is utilized in the writing of literary works such as pagsulat ng tula (poetry), writing a nobela (novel), or developing a script ng dula (a script for a play).
Functional Uses of Language for Social Interaction and Regulation
Beyond information gathering, language is a tool for expressing needs, controlling behavior, maintaining relationships, and sharing personal sentiments.
Instrumental is the function used to satisfy a person's needs or get things done. This includes acts of pakikiusap (requesting), pag-utos (commanding), or the formal creation of a liham-pangangalakal (business letter).
Regutatori or Regulatoryo is the function of language used to control, manage, or guide the actions and behaviors of others. This is seen in the implementation of mga batas (laws), the posting of warnings like "Bawal Manigarilyo" (No Smoking), or the following of a resipe sa pagluluto (cooking recipe).
Interaksyonal is the function used to establish and maintain social relationships with others. This is common in everyday social life through pangangamusta (greeting or checking on someone), pagbibiro (joking), or pakikipagkwentuhan sa barkada (chatting and sharing stories with a group of friends).
Personal is the function focused on the expression of one's own opinions, feelings, or inner reflections. This includes private acts such as pagsulat sa diary (writing in a diary) or public expressions such as pagpopost ng saloobin sa Facebook (posting one's sentiments or thoughts on Facebook).
