Formal vs Informal Fallacies

Formal Fallacies

Informal Fallacies

  • Arise from issues in the content of the argument rather than its structure.

  • Cannot be easily identified by form inspection; require detailed analysis of the argument’s content.

Lesson 1: Fallacy in General

  • Definition of fallacy: A deficiency or logical problem in an argument due to various reasons excluding merely false premises.

  • Types of fallacies: formal and informal.

1.1 The Meaning of Fallacy

  • Fallacies violate standard rules or criteria of good arguments, which include:

    • Relevance: Premises must support the truth of the conclusion.

    • Acceptability: Premises must be acceptable to reasonable persons.

    • Sufficiency: Sufficient grounds must be provided for the conclusion.

    • Rebuttability: Arguments must anticipate and counter significant challenges.

  • Arguments that violate any of these criteria are considered fallacious.

1.2 Types of Fallacies

  • Split into formal and informal, determined by the types of issues they present.

  • Formal Fallacies: Structural issues, identifiable by form inspection. Examples:

    • Categorical syllogism example demonstrating invalid structure:

      • All tigers are animals.

      • All mammals are animals.

      • Conclusion: All tigers are mammals (fallacious).

  • Informal Fallacies: Content issues, not identifiable by form.

    • Incorrect logical structure.

Informal Fallacies Examples

  • Appeal to Force: Coercing an acceptance of the conclusion through threats.

Lesson 3: Fallacies of Weak Induction

  • Occurs when premises provide insufficient support for the conclusion despite logical relevance.

Types of Weak Induction Fallacies

  1. Appeal to Unqualified Authority: Citing non-expert testimonials.

  2. Hasty Generalization: Drawing a conclusion from an unrepresentative sample.

  3. False Cause: Assuming a causal link without sufficient evidence.

  4. Weak Analogy: Comparing two things that aren't sufficiently alike.

  3. False Dichotomy: Presenting limited alternatives where more exist.

  4. Suppressed Evidence: Ignoring relevant evidence that would change the argument’s conclusion.

Ambiguity Fallacies

  1. Equivocation: Use of ambiguous language to mislead.

  2. Amphiboly: Misinterpretation due to structural ambiguity.

Grammatical Analogy Fallacies

  1. Composition: Erroneous inference about the whole based on its parts.

  2. Division: Erroneous inference about parts based on the whole.
