Chapter Overview

Cannot be easily identified by form inspection; require detailed analysis of the argument’s content.

Lesson 1: Fallacy in General
Definition of fallacy: A deficiency or logical problem in an argument due to various reasons excluding merely false premises.
Types of fallacies: formal and informal.
1.1 The Meaning of Fallacy
Fallacies violate standard rules or criteria of good arguments, which include:
Relevance: Premises must support the truth of the conclusion.
Acceptability: Premises must be acceptable to reasonable persons.
Sufficiency: Sufficient grounds must be provided for the conclusion.
Rebuttability: Arguments must anticipate and counter significant challenges.
Arguments that violate any of these criteria are considered fallacious.
1.2 Types of Fallacies
Split into formal and informal, determined by the types of issues they present.
Formal Fallacies: Structural issues, identifiable by form inspection. Examples:
Categorical syllogism example demonstrating invalid structure:
All tigers are animals.
All mammals are animals.
Conclusion: All tigers are mammals (fallacious).
Informal Fallacies: Content issues, not identifiable by form.
