While Thomas Cole laid the the groundwork for the Hudson river school, a brilliant second generation emerged, expanding the schools geographical and stylistic boundaries. Chief among them was Fredric Edwin Church, Coles only formal pupil, who took the movement to a global scale with his massive scientifically accurate landscape pieces. Alongside him was Asher Brown Durand who favored a more intimate deeply detailed art style for his pieces. There was also Jasper Francis Crosby, who became famous for his vivid palettes capturing the bright colors of the American autumn.
