Bacteria: Explained
Bacteria are single-celled microorganisms that have both plant and animal characteristics .Some bacteria are harmful but some are also harmless, here’s why:
TWO TYPES OF BACTERIA
There are thousands of bacteria. All which fall into two types:
1) Nonpathogenic ⤵
Most bacteria are nonpathogenic meaning that they are harmless organisms. They also may perform useful functions. They are safe to come in contact with since they do not cause disease or harm.
Nonpathogenic organisms are used to make: yogurt, cheese, and some medicines. They are also in the human body to help: the body break down food, protect against infection, and stimulate the immune system.
⬇ 2) Pathogenic
This bacteria are THE harmful microorganisms that can cause disease or infection in humans when they invade the body.
Bacteria multiply best in warm, damp, dark, and dirty places (even moist places).
GROWTH AND REPRODUCTION
ACTIVE STAGE
• Bacteria grows and reproduces
• Takes 20-60 minutes to reach
• Divides into 2 cells - daughter cells (binary fission)
INACTIVE OR SPORE FORMING STAGE
• Bacteria coat themselves with wax-like outer shells
• Can blow out spores
• Resistant to adverse conditions
