Japanese Learning Roadmap

Stage 1: Absolute Beginner to JLPT N5 (Foundations)

1. Unit 1: Writing Systems & Basic Pronunciation

   • Hiragana & Katakana (Kana):

   • Master Hiragana (46 characters) first, followed immediately by Katakana (46 characters).

   • Practice writing and recognition daily until instant recall is achieved.

   • Pronunciation Basics:

   • Learn basic vowel sounds ($a, i, u, e, o$), long vowels, voiced sounds (dakuten), and doubled consonants ($っ$).

2. Unit 2: Basic Grammar & Core Vocabulary (Genki I Focus)

   • Genki I Textbook (Chapters 1–12):

   • Covers foundational sentence structures ($X \text{ は } Y \text{ です}$), verb conjugations (present, past, polite $〜ます$ form, te-form $〜て$), adjective types ($i$-adjectives and $na$-adjectives), and essential particles ($は, が, を, に, で, と, も$).

   • Vocabulary Target:

   • ~800 fundamental words.

3. Unit 3: Introductory Kanji

   • Target:

   • ~100 basic N5 Kanji (numbers, days of the week, basic directions, common nouns).

Stage 2: Elementary Japanese to JLPT N4 (Lower Intermediate)

1. Unit 1: Grammar Expansion (Genki II Focus)

   • Genki II Textbook (Chapters 13–23):

   • Potential form ($〜られる/〜できる$), volitional form ($〜よう/〜ましょう$), conditional forms ($〜たら, 〜ば$), comparison, honorific ($敬語$) and humble forms, passive ($〜られる$) and causative ($〜させる$) structures.

   • Vocabulary Target:

   • Additional ~700 words (Total: ~1,500 words).

2. Unit 2: Kanji Expansion

   • Target:

   • Additional ~200 Kanji (Total: ~300 Kanji for N4).

Stage 3: Intermediate Japanese to JLPT N3 (Bridging to Fluency)

1. Unit 1: Intermediate Grammar & Transitioning to Native Content

   • Move away from English-heavy explanations to Japanese-explained concepts or intermediate texts (e.g., Quartet I or An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese).

   • Focus on nuanced sentence connectors, expressional nuances, and complex conditionals.

2. Unit 2: Kanji & Vocabulary Scaling

   • Kanji Target: ~650 total Kanji (additional 350 Kanji).

   • Vocabulary Target: ~3,750 total words.

3. Unit 3: Native Media Immersion

   • Start reading beginner-friendly native materials: Tadoku Graded Readers, easy manga (e.g., Yotsuba&!), and simplified news articles.

Stage 4: Upper-Intermediate Japanese to JLPT N2 (Business & Academic)

1. Unit 1: Advanced Grammar & Functional Patterns

   • Formal, written, and business-oriented grammar patterns.

   • Focus on swift reading comprehension and listening to natural-speed native speech.

2. Unit 2: Kanji & Vocabulary Expansion

   • Kanji Target: ~1,000 total Kanji (additional 350 Kanji).

   • Vocabulary Target: ~6,000 total words.

3. Unit 3: Extensive Immersion

   • Read light novels, articles, and watch anime/drama without English subtitles.

Stage 5: Advanced Japanese to JLPT N1 (Native-Level Mastery)

1. Unit 1: Nuanced & Literary Grammar

   • Rare, formal, historical, and literary grammatical structures used in news, academic papers, and official documentation.

2. Unit 2: Full Kanji & Vocabulary Completion

   • Kanji Target: ~2,136 Joyo Kanji.

   • Vocabulary Target: ~10,000+ words.

1. YouTube Channels

   • Tokini Andy: Comprehensive video walkthroughs of every chapter in Genki I and Genki II.

   • Game Gengo: Teaches Japanese grammar and vocabulary using retro and modern video games.

   • Cure Dolly: Structural and logical breakdowns of Japanese grammar mechanics.

   • Comprehensible Japanese: Listening practice using simple, natural Japanese categorized by level.

   • Nihongo no Mori: JLPT-focused grammar explanations taught directly in Japanese.

2. Gamified Tools & Memorization Systems

   • Anki (Spaced Repetition System): Free flashcard software. Download premade decks such as Core 2.3k/6k for vocabulary and Tae Kim Grammar.
