Urinary System Notes

Urinary System Overview

Structure of the Kidneys

  • Definition of Kidneys: The kidneys are vital organs in the urinary system responsible for filtering blood, removing waste, and regulating electrolyte balance.
  • Migration of Kidneys: Normally, kidneys migrate upwards to their anatomical location during development, which is essential for proper function.

Ectopic Kidneys

  • Definition: An ectopic kidney is a kidney that is not located in its usual anatomical position.
  • Characteristics:
    • Short Ureters: In cases of ectopic kidneys, the ureters are often shorter than normal.
    • Acquired vs. Congenital: Ectopic kidneys may be congenital (present at birth) or acquired due to various conditions.

Types of Ectopia

  • Inferior Ectopia:
    • Occurs when the kidney is situated lower than its normal position.
    • Reported prevalence: 29 cases (15%) in recent studies.
  • Crusoe Ectopia: A situation where both kidneys lie on the same side of the body.

Clinical Implications

  • Pelvic Mass: A mass may be palpated in the pelvis area, indicating potential complications associated with ectopic kidneys.
  • Normal Ureters: Despite ectopia, the ureters may appear normal, which is significant for diagnosis and treatment planning.
