Molar Mass Quick Reference
Molar mass basics
Molar mass M relates mass and moles; unit is \(g/mol\).
Formula: \(M = \sumi ni \cdot Mi\) where ni is the number of atoms of element i in the formula and M_i is the atomic mass (g/mol).
Molar mass of elements
Nitrogen atom: \(M = 14.01 \text{g/mol}\).
Fluorine atom: \(M = 19.00 \text{g/mol}\).
Molar mass of simple molecules
O(3): \(M(O3) = 3 \times 16.00 = 48.00 \text{g/mol}\).
S(8): \(M(S8) = 8 \times 32.07 = 256.56 \text{g/mol}\).
CO(2): \(M(CO2) = 12.01 + 2 \times 16.00 = 44.01 \text{g/mol}\).
SiF(4): \(M(SiF4) = 28.09 + 4 \times 19.00 = 104.09 \text{g/mol}\).
Molar mass of glucose
Formula: \(C6H{12}O_6\).
Calculation: \(M = 6 \times 12.01 + 12 \times 1.008 + 6 \times 16.00 = 180.156 \text{g/mol}\).
Formulas from charges (calcium phosphate)
Calcium phosphate formula: \(Ca3(PO4)_2\) (ionic compound).
Atoms: 3 Ca, 2 P, 8 O.
Calculation: \(M = 3 \times 40.08 + 2 \times 30.97 + 8 \times 16.00 = 310.18 \text{g/mol}\).
Vanadium(V) hydrogen phosphate
Formula: \(V2(HPO4)_5\).
Elements: 2 V, 5 H, 5 P, 20 O.
Calculation: \(M = 2 \times 50.94 + 5 \times 1.008 + 5 \times 30.97 + 20 \times 16.00 = 581.77 \text{g/mol}\).
