Optical storage technology is newer than magnetic storage technology.
Early personal computers used magnetic floppy disks and hard drives.
Since the mid-1990s, PCs began incorporating optical drives: CDs, DVDs, and later Blu-ray discs.
Optical storage relies on physical impressions on a disc's surface rather than magnetism.
Comparison to Magnetic Storage
Reading Mechanism:
Magnetic discs utilize read/write heads to interpret data through magnetic fields.
Optical discs use laser light to read data from pits (dark spots) and lands (light, non-pitted areas) on the disc.
Pits represent binary data (0s and 1s): darker areas indicate written data.
Structure of Optical Discs
Pits and Lands:
Pits are extremely small, less than 1 micron in diameter.
A disc's surface shows darker areas when data has been written.
The compact nature of pits allows optical drives to have higher storage capacities compared to magnetic media.
Types of Optical Discs and Capacities
Compact Disc (CD):
Recordable CD (CD-R): 650 MB storage capacity at a cost of about 15 cents.
Rewritable CDs (CD-RW) are less common due to the rise of Flash drives.
Digital Versatile Disc (DVD):
DVD-R offers around 4.7 GB to 34.7 GB of storage, costing around 25 cents.
This represents a factor of approximately 7 times the storage capacity of a CD.
Blu-ray Disc:
Offers about 6 times the capacity of a DVD, with storage of approximately 25 GB, costing about 50 cents.
Decline of Optical Storage Usage
Due to the popularity of streaming services like Netflix, optical disks have fallen out of favor, as streaming provides easier access to content.
The internet enables centralized, efficient data access, reducing the reliance on physical media.
Standards of Optical Media
Recordable (R):
Standard for writable discs (e.g., CD-R, DVD-R).
Read-Only Memory (ROM):
Used for commercially purchased software on CDs (e.g., CD-ROM), which cannot be modified. These can last up to 100 years if preserved properly.
Rewritable (RW):
Limited use due to compatibility issues; requires specific drives for reading and writing data.
Never reached mainstream popularity compared to the convenience of flash drives and solid-state storage.
