Lymphatic System : Functions

• Collect extracellular fluid and return it to the main circulation

• Defend against infection

• Absorb and transport fats from the digestive system

• Lymph:

  • found in lacteals

  • high fat concentration - milky colour

Formation of Lymph

• Tonsils

  • mops up extra fluid, brings to nodes

• Thymus Gland

• Lymph Nodes

  • filled with white blood cells, fluids, and returns the fluid to the heart

• Spleen

  • used to breakdown red blood cells

• Lymph Nodes

  • groyres

• Bone Marrow

• Pressure in arteries is higher

• extracellular fluid should be returned to the blood or tissues will swell (oedema)

Bruises

• extreme form of extra cellular fluids

• has to be cleansed in tonsils before returned to the heart
