Pressure-Reducing Mattresses/Surfaces
Use of pressure-reducing mattresses and support surfaces does not eliminate the need for regular and frequent position changes, skin assessments, and modifications of risk factors. Pressure-reducing mattresses/surfaces reduce or relieve pressure and reduce the risk for pressure injuries.
Support surfaces:
Diminish pressure by redistributing the body’s weight over a greater surface area made of foam, gels, fluids, or air
Include overlays, replacement mattresses, and specialty beds; made for chairs, operating room tables, and stretchers
Accommodate all types of patients: children, adults, and the obese
Evaluation of pressure-reducing mattresses/surfaces includes the same criteria as the general interventions presented earlier. However, if the patient deteriorates (declines) and has skin breakdown, more aggressive action is needed. Consultations with the health care provider, wound, ostomy, and continence nurse (WOCN), and nutritionist/dietitian are required. There may be other issues occurring, such as malnutrition, that are compounding the problem.
