Elements

An element is a pure substance made up of only one type of atom. It cannot be broken down or simplified into simpler substances by any chemical or physical means.

  • Characteristics of Elements:

    • Consists of identical atoms with the same atomic number.

    • Represented by unique chemical symbols (e.g., hydrogen as HH, oxygen as OO, carbon as CC).

    • Classified into metals, non-metals, and metalloids based on physical and chemical properties.

    • Examples include pure gold (AuAu), iron (FeFe), and helium (HeHe).

Compounds

A compound is a pure substance composed of two or more different elements chemically combined in a fixed ratio by mass.

  • Characteristics of Compounds:

    • Formed through chemical reactions involving the sharing or transfer of electrons.

    • Properties of a compound are entirely distinct from the properties of its constituent elements.

    • Can only be separated into constituent elements through chemical methods (e.g., electrolysis), not physical methods.

    • Represented by chemical formulas showing the fixed ratio of elements, such as water (H<em>2OH<em>2O) or carbon dioxide (CO</em>2CO</em>2).

Mixtures

A mixture consists of two or more substances (elements or compounds) physically mixed together without any chemical bonding.

  • Characteristics of Mixtures:

    • Components retain their individual chemical properties.

    • Constituents can be present in variable proportions.

    • Can be separated into individual components using physical separation techniques such as filtration, evaporation, distillation, or chromatography.

  • Types of Mixtures:

    • Homogeneous Mixtures: Uniform composition throughout, with components indistinguishable from one another (e.g., saltwater solution, air).

    • Heterogeneous Mixtures: Non-uniform composition with visible boundaries between components (e.g., sand in water, oil in water).
