Weapons of mass destruction

WMDs have the potential to obliterate the entire human race and planet earth. Whilst no religious people agree with their use, some see their existence as a necessary evil to deter countries from going to war.

In terms of war, the way we do it has changed a lot over the years. Whilst in the olden days you would come face to face with the person you are fighting on the battlefield, now we fight usually from a distance using weaponary and the army or even by dropping nuclear bombs.

There are 4 types of WMD to know:

  • Nuclear

  • Biological

  • Chemical

  • Radiological

Nuclear:

Will kill hundreds of thousands of people on impact and then following this, people will keep dying from nuclear fallout for years to come.

Biological:

Weapons that have living diseases and viruses that can infect people and cause them to suffer and die.

Chemical:

Non-living toxins that can cause lots of suffering and death.

Radiological:

“Dirty bombs.”

Conventional explosions that go off and in them have radioactive material that not only can kill people but damage the environment too.

Is it justifiable to own nuclear weapons?

No:

  • Kills thousands of people, even innocent civilians

  • Can kill people years and years later

  • Harms the environment

  • Can be taken by terrorists

  • Very expensive to produce and maintain

  • Cannot be used proportionately

Yes:

  • Acts as a deterrent to stop other countries attacking you

  • Could be used to end a war early and therefore cause less deaths

  • Lesser of two evils
