Unipolar depression  

  • Depression is often used to describe general sadness or unhappiness  

  • This loos use of the term confuses a normal mood swing with clinical syndrome  

  • Depressive disorder can bring severe and long-lasting psychological painand may intensify  

How common is unipolar depression  

  • Around 20% of all adults  

  • Similar in many other country  

  • Higher among poor people  

  • Women are more likely than men to experience severe unipolar depression  

  • Approximately 85% recover ,s ome without treatment

  • DSM-5 list several type of depressive disorder

  • Premenstrual dysphoric  

  • Depressive symptoms before menstruation  

  • Disruptive mood regulation  

  • Persistent depressive symptoms and recurrent outburst of severe temper  

What cause unipolar depression  

  • Stress may be a trigger  

  • Biological view  

  • Genetic factors  

  • Some people inherit a biological predispostion  

  • Biochemical factors  

  • NTs : Serotonin and norepinephrine  

  • Other NTs are involved  

  • Endocrine system / hormone release  

  • Abnormal levels of cortisol  

  • Abnormal melatonin secretion
