Proper Restraint of Turtles

Restraint Techniques

Small Turtles

  • Positioning:

    1. Place them on a flat, stable surface to prevent accidental falls.

    2. Ensure the turtle is calm before attempting to hold it.

  • Holding Technique:

    1. Use both hands to support the turtle, making sure to grip gently but securely.

    2. The turtle's head should face away from you to minimize the risk of bites, as turtles might feel threatened if they can see you reaching towards them.

    3. Avoid applying too much pressure to avoid hurting the turtle.

Large Turtles

  • Grip Location:

    1. For larger turtles, hold them by gripping the back edge of the shell.

    2. This grip should be firm enough to ensure stability but not so tight that it causes discomfort to the turtle.

  • Hand Positioning:

    1. Place one hand at the rear of the shell while keeping the other hand at the back of the carapace (top shell).

    2. It’s crucial to maintain a safe distance from the turtle’s mouth to avoid potential bites, as large turtles can be more defensive if they feel threatened.

Towel Restraint Technique

  1. Preparation:

    • Before handling the turtle, lay a towel flat on a surface near the turtle, ensuring it is easily accessible and not wrinkled, as wrinkles may cause the turtle to feel uneasy.

  2. Lifting the Turtle:

    • Gently lift the turtle by supporting its plastron (bottom shell) with one hand while using the other hand to hold the back of the carapace.

    • This method provides balanced support and reduces stress on the turtle.

  3. Head Position:

    • Ensure that the turtle's head is kept away from your body and fingers, which decreases the chance of bites and allows the turtle to feel more secure.

  4. Covering with Towel:

    • Once you have lifted the turtle, gently place the towel over its shell, covering its body while leaving its head exposed.

    • This covering helps calm the turtle by providing a sense of security and mimicking its natural hiding behaviors.

    • Adjust the towel as needed to ensure the turtle is comfortably wrapped without restricting its movement too much.
