Weight

Measuring a patient’s weight is performed at each office visit. Medication dosages are often determined based on weight. BMI, predisposition to medical conditions, eating disorders, and weight management are monitored in relation to a patient’s overall general health.

  • One kilogram equals 2.2 pounds (1 kg equals 2.2 lb).

  • To convert pounds to kilograms, divide the weight in pounds by 2.2.

Example:

148 lb = ____ kg

148 ÷ 2.2 = 67.27 (round to the nearest tenth) 67.3 kg

  • To convert kilograms to pounds, multiply the weight in kilograms by 2.2.

Example:

87 kg = ____ lb

87 x 2.2 = 191.4 lb

BMI

BMI= Weight in Kg/ Height in m²

or

weight in LB/ height in inches² X 703= BMI

A BMI percentage of 18.5 to 24.9 is considered normal. Results less than 18.5 classify an individual as underweight. Greater than 24.9 leads to a classification of overweight, with obesity being 30.0 and greater. The MA may be responsible for calculating BMI using calculations and graphs or using a calculation program within the electronic health record.
