Irony

Irony is about expectations. Irony is the opposite of what is expected.

THREE DIFFERENT KINDS OF IRONY

  • Verbal

  • Dramatic

  • Situational

VERBAL IRONY

Verbal irony is when a character says one thing but means the opposite. It’s also called ā€˜Sarcasm’ or ā€˜being sarcastic’.

Example: The garbage bin smells really nice, Great! Another homework assignment

DRAMATIC IRONY

When the reader understands more about the events happening in the book than the character. You know something the character doesn’t.

Example: Tim’s parents are proud of the ā€œAā€ he got but we know he cheated, Alex writes a love poem to Judy but we know that Judy loves Devin.

SITUATIONAL IRONY

When what actually happens is the opposite of what is expected. Something about the situation is completely unexpected.

Example: Zulma’s mother works but her husband is in charge of her money, Bill Gates uses an Apple Computer
