Irony is about expectations. Irony is the opposite of what is expected.
THREE DIFFERENT KINDS OF IRONY
Verbal
Dramatic
Situational
VERBAL IRONY
Verbal irony is when a character says one thing but means the opposite. Itās also called āSarcasmā or ābeing sarcasticā.
Example: The garbage bin smells really nice, Great! Another homework assignment
DRAMATIC IRONY
When the reader understands more about the events happening in the book than the character. You know something the character doesnāt.
Example: Timās parents are proud of the āAā he got but we know he cheated, Alex writes a love poem to Judy but we know that Judy loves Devin.
SITUATIONAL IRONY
When what actually happens is the opposite of what is expected. Something about the situation is completely unexpected.
Example: Zulmaās mother works but her husband is in charge of her money, Bill Gates uses an Apple Computer
