Effective Argumentation (Using reason to move an audience)
Introduction
Argumentation: a reasoned, logical way of asserting the soundness of a position, belief, or conclusion
Arguments can have different purposes:
◼ To convince other people to accept your position
◼ To defend your position
◼ To question or refute another position
Persuasion vs. Argumentation
They are not the same thing
Persuasion attempts to move an audience to adopt a belief or follow a course of action by appealing to its emotions or sense of ethics
Argumentation is not primarily concerned with convincing an audience to do something; its main purpose is to show that certain ideas are valid, while others are not
◼ Appeals to reason, intellect
