Muscle Tissue

1. Myocyte - A muscle cell, also called a muscle fiber

2. Actin - Thin protein filaments in muscle cells

3. Myosin - Thick protein filaments in muscle cells

4. Striated muscle - Muscle tissue with visible stripes or bands

5. Smooth muscle - Muscle tissue without visible stripes

6. Skeletal muscle - Striated muscle attached to bones

7. Cardiac muscle - Striated muscle found in the heart

8. Sarcomere - The basic unit of muscle contraction

9. Endomysium - Connective tissue surrounding individual muscle fibers

10. Perimysium - Connective tissue surrounding bundles of muscle fibers

11. Epimysium - Connective tissue surrounding an entire muscle

12. Excitability - Ability to respond to stimuli

13. Contractibility - Ability to shorten or contract

14. Extensibility - Ability to be stretched

15. Elasticity - Ability to return to original shape

16. Z disc - Structure that anchors actin filaments in a sarcomere

17. A band - Dark band in a sarcomere containing both actin and myosin

18. I band - Light band in a sarcomere containing only actin

19. H zone - Central region of the A band containing only myosin

20. M line - Structure in the center of the H zone

22. Intercalated disc - Junction between cardiac muscle cells

23. Pacemaker cells - Specialized cardiac cells that generate electrical impulses
