The Stamp Act 2
A tax measure called the “Stamp Act” required various documents to have revenue stamps, which would fund the defense of the colonies. This act drew strong resistance from influential groups like journalists, lawyers, and merchants across America. In response, merchants formed nonimportation associations, and trade with Britain declined. The “Sons of Liberty,” secret groups opposing the act, often used violence to protest, leading to its nullification. The Virginia House of Burgesses denounced taxation without representation, sparking a call for a “Stamp Act Congress” where representatives declared that only local legislatures could impose taxes.
