1. How did Lincoln and Johnson differ with the Radicals concerning the ultimate responsibility for Reconstruction?

Lincoln and Johnson wanted 10% of whoever voted in 1869 to take a place of allegiance while the radicals wanted the percentage to be a majority of adult white males.

2. How did the Fourteenth Amendment provide a way for the central government to extend its power over state and local governments?

By giving free men full citizenship at a federal level, If it’s not directly delegated to the states then federal government can step in, and former confederate leaders must go through a process of being voted in by congress rather than by their state.

3. Why did Southerners resent the Reconstruction governments that the Radicals established over them?

The radical viewed the south as a conquered enemy. They kept the south from having representation in congress until the military governed agreed that they had been fully reconstructed.

4. Why did the Liberal Republicans' choice of a candidate in 1872 harm their efforts to defeat Grant?

Horace Greeley was inexperienced and too eccentric.
