PSYC SECON EXAM

PSY 2314 Second Exam review Chapter 6: Know Piaget’s processes of development very well (e.g., assimilation, accommodation, equilibrium). Know his stages of cognitive development – sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operations, and formal operations. I will not be asking questions regarding what age children enter into these difference stages, but know the sequence and the characteristics and limitations for each stage. Especially know the 6 substages of the sensorimotor stage and what is a circular reaction. Know the material in the text and what we discussed in class on object permanence, egocentrism, animism, artificialism, hypothetical-deductive reasoning, and the imaginary audience and personal fable. Know what conservation, centration, seriation, and reversibility refer to. For Vygotsky – know what the ZPD is and how is scaffolding used to help move children through the ZPD. Also know what Vygotsky had to say about the speech of young children and how did this differ from Piaget’s view? That’s it for this Chapter. Chapter 7: Know the different stages of the Info. Processing model and how material is moved between these stages. Know the various aspects of attention and how these change as we age. Know the limitations of both STM and LTM and how to get around these limitations. Know the different “types” of LTM including episodic, semantic, procedural, and prospective memory. Know the works of Elizabeth Loftus. Chapter 8: Know what intelligence is and isn’t and be familiar with what IQ tests really measure and what are they most often used for. Know what was discussed regarding misuses of testing and cultural bias of tests. Be familiar with Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences (don’t need to know all eight) and Sternberg’s triarchic theory. Know how intelligence is thought to change as we age and know the difference between crystallized and fluid intelligence.
