Interior perspective of the mezzanine level in a two-storey duplex designed for Māori families in Ihumātao, New Zealand. The space is built mostly with natural timber and warm earthy tones, featuring subtle Māori carvings (whakairo) integrated into the beams, wall panels, and balustrades. The mezzanine overlooks the open-plan living area below, creating a strong visual connection while maintaining a sense of openness. On one side, there is a children’s study and play zone with shelves, cushions, and low tables. On the other side, there is a culturally significant space for Māori purposes such as weaving (raranga), storytelling, or wānanga. Timber privacy screens and slatted partitions divide the two areas, offering flexible separation while still allowing light and air to pass through. The design reflects values of whānau, manaakitanga, and kaitiakitanga — blending modern communal living with Māori cultural identity.
