1st-5th commandments

  • How we prepare for anything shows how important that thing is to us

    • School, Sports, Family, Etc.

  • God & Holiness → Sainthood

  • False idols = money, power, fame, friends, etc.

  • Doubt→Refusal of Faith or lack of faith

  • Heresy→  Denying some truth of Faith

  • Schism→ Breaking Away from the Catholic Church

  • Presumption→We do not need God to be saved or can be saved w/o redemption

Despair→Thinking even God cannot save us from our sins

  1. Indifference→ Neglect or lack of thought/care towards God’s Love

  2. Ingratitude→Not giving sufficient thanks for God’s love

  3. Lukewarmness→Not responding quickly or eagerly to God’s love

  4. Acedia→Refusing to be joyful or even distasteful towards God’s love

  5. Hatred of God→ Cursing of God

  6. Superstition→Worshipping God in a false way or worshipping a false God

  1. Irreligion→Behaving sacrilegiously or tempting God

  2. Sacrilegious→Profaning sacraments, liturgical actions, people, places or other consecrated things

  3. Divination→Attempting to control God or discover the future w/o God

  4. Magic→Attempting to control occult powers

Occult→Perceived secret knowledge, practices associated with the supernatural, physics or sometimes evil. 

  • God made himself known to the Israelites

    • YAHWEH → Name of God “I am who I am”

  • Israelites (Chosen People) revered God’s name and never used it

    • Jesus committed Blasphemy when he called himself “I am”.

  • What is in vain then?

    • Anger, frustration, boredom, exclamation, surprise, etc. 

    • Perjury→swear under oath with no intention of keeping it

Blasphemy→speak against God and not show the respect he deserves

Sabbath day → day set aside to praise God

Saturday for Jews/Sunday for Christians → A day to remember, reflect, pray, and praise

Avoid unnecessary activities, work, or actions

7th day → 7 is perfect/completion

Holy day of obligation → sin to skip mass without a legitimate reason

Importance of Family → Jewish Tradition: Honor b/c they gave you natural life and brought you into the Covenant w/God

New Covenant → Through Jesus we can now participate in God’s covenant through Baptism.  Jesus does not remove families→ He perfects it!

Marriage & Family → Marriage has existed well before Jesus.  Through Christ Marriage became a Sacrament.  Marriage creates the Domestic Church

Requirements of the 4th commandment:

  1. Obedience: Respect through our words and actions/Not blindly follow

  2. Protect the Common Good → Peace, Justice and Human Flourishing 

  3. Parents must Love Their Children → Provide food, clothing, protection, education, etc. 

  4. Respect Authority → Civil, church, family and work authority should be respected if…

Good for all Humans

  • Respect life in all stages

  • God created All →Everything has dignity

  • Nothing or Nobody can ever take away our dignity

Intentional Killing is Wrong

  • Murder, Abortion, Euthanasia, Embryonic Stem Cell Research, 

  • Crimes of Passion

  • Suicide

  • Body Integrity

    • Kidnapping, Physical and Mental Torture, or dangerous experiments

Not All Killing is Wrong

  • Personal protection, Just War, Defending another life

  • Defense YES! Until threat has been stopped

  • Minimum Amount of Force

  • Death Penalty ≠ Justice  →IT IS WRONG!
