GreenEO: Urban Air Quality Monitoring Overview
WP2 Overall Objectives
The overall objective of WP2 is to harness data from MTG-S and EPS-SG satellites for urban-scale air quality applications.
Satellite Programs Overview
MTG-S: Geostationary satellites with a planned launch of MTG-S1 in July 2025. Key instruments include:
- Infrared Sounder (IRS): Provides hyperspectral data for vertical temperature and humidity profiles.
- Sentinel-4/UVN Instrument: Focuses on monitoring atmospheric composition and air quality over Europe.
EPS-SG: The second generation of polar-orbiting satellites, comprising two types: Metop-SGA and Metop-SGB. Only Metop-SGA will carry the Sentinel-5 instrument.
Sentinel-4 Instrument on MTG-S
- Purpose: To monitor air quality, trace gases, and aerosols over Europe with a spatial resolution of approximately and hourly updates during daylight.
- Monitored Constituents: NO2, O3, SO2, HCHO, CHOCHO, and aerosols.
