Review of Clostridium difficile Infection
Introduction
Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) is a Gram-positive, spore-forming, anaerobic bacillus.
Characteristics: Widely distributed in the intestinal tract of humans and animals and in the environment.

Increasing frequency and severity of C. difficile infection (CDI) in the last decade, making it one of the most common hospital-acquired infections.

First-line Treatments:
Antibiotics of choice include:
Vancomycin (125 mg orally 4 times daily for 10 days).
Fidaxomicin (200 mg orally twice daily for 10 days).
Metronidazole has been shown to be inferior and is not preferred.
Recurrence Management:
Pulsed-taper vancomycin regimen or fidaxomicin for recurrent episodes.
Emerging Treatments:
Immunoglobulins and monoclonal antibodies (e.g., bezlotoxumab) show potential for preventing recurrent infections.
Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is highly effective for preventing CDI recurrence and restoring healthy microbiota.
Multiple methods of administration include colonoscopy, enema, or oral capsules.
