US Amendments

  • 11th: Lawsuits against States; states are protected from lawsuits from people living in other states

  • 12th: Choosing the Executive; modifies and clarifies the procedure for electing vice-presidents and presidents (President chooses the VP)

  • 13th: Abolishing Slavery

  • 14th: Equal Protection of the Laws; Equal Protection Clause, Due Process Clause, Citizenship Clause, and clauses dealing with the Confederacy and its officials → removes ⅗ compromise 

  • 15th: Suffrage for Black Men; reserves citizens the voting rights regardless of their race, color, or previous slave status 

  • 16th: Income taxes; reserves U.S. government right to tax income

  • 17th: Direct Election of Senators; popular voting is how senators are chosen

  • 18th: Prohibition; denies the sale and consumption of alcohol 

  • 19th: Women’s suffrage; reserves women voting rights

  • 20th: Lame Ducks; establishes start date for Congress (Jan 3) and President (Jan 20)

  • 21st: Repealing prohibition; repealed 18th amendment. State laws still in place

  • 22nd: Presidential Term Limits; president serves for a max of 2 terms of 10 years

  • 23rd: Electoral Votes for DC; gave them electoral votes for presidential electors

  • 24th: Banning the poll tax; citizens cannot be denied the suffrage rights for not paying a poll tax or any other taxes

  • 25th: Presidential Succession and Disability; establishes the procedures for a successor of a President

  • 26th: Suffrage for Young People; reserves the right for citizens 18 and older to vote

  • 27th: Limiting Congressional Pay Raises; denies any laws that vary the salaries of Congress members until the beginning of the next terms of office for Representatives.
