Arm Notes

Muscles of the Forearm

  • Extensor Digitorum: Extends fingers/wrist, abducts fingers; located on the posterior forearm.

  • Extensor Carpi Radialis Longus: Extends/abducts wrist; located on the lateral forearm.

  • Brachialis: Flexes forearm at elbow; located beneath biceps brachii in upper arm.

  • Abductor Pollicis Longus: Abducts/extends thumb; located in forearm extending to the thumb.

  • Triceps Brachii: Main elbow extensor; located on the back of upper arm.

  • Coracobrachialis: Flexes/adducts humerus; located in the upper arm from scapula.

  • Brachioradialis: Stabilizes elbow, aids in forearm movement; located in the forearm.

  • Palmaris Longus: Weak wrist/elbow flexor, tenses palm skin; located on anterior forearm.

  • Pronator Quadratus: Prime mover for forearm rotation; located distally between radius and ulna.

  • Extensor Carpi Radialis Brevis: Extends/abducts wrist; located in forearm.

  • Flexor Digitorum Profundus: Flexes fingers/wrist; located in deeper forearm layer.

  • Flexor Digitorum Superficialis: Flexes wrist/middle phalanges; located above profundus in forearm.

  • Extensor Pollicis Longus: Extends thumb; located in forearm.

  • Extensor Pollicis Brevis: Extends distal phalanx of thumb; located extending toward thumb in forearm.

  • Flexor Carpi Ulnaris: Powerful wrist flexor/adductor; stabilizes wrist during finger extension.

  • Flexor Pollicis Longus: Flexes distal phalanx of thumb; located in forearm extending to thumb.

  • Flexor Carpi Radialis: Powerful wrist flexor/abductor; located on anterior forearm.

  • Extensor Carpi Ulnaris: Extends/abducts wrist; located on posterior forearm.

  • Supinator: Aids in forearm supination; located around elbow.

  • Pronator Teres: Weak elbow flexor, pronates forearm; located near the elbow in forearm.

  • Biceps Brachii: Flexes elbow and lifts forearm; located on anterior upper arm.
