Wilfrid expelled the Quartodeciman heresy and schism from Northumbria where the Scots introduced it through St. Aidan

  • Decided at a Synod in Whitby 664

  • Colman, the second successor of Aidan, defended the Scottish observance of Easter by the authority of St. Columba and the apostle John. Wilfrid argued the Roman observance on the authority of Peter in Rome and the universal custom of Christendom

    • The king (Oswy and his son Alfrid) said that “I will not contradict the door-keeper, lest when I come to the gates of the kingdom of heaven, there should be none to open them.”


Theodore

  • native of Tarsus, educated in Athens, acquainted with Greek and Latin

  •  He arrived at Cante;bury May 27,669 and visited to all of England, establishing the - Roman rule of Easter, settled bishops 

  •  Unjustly deposed Wilfrid of York

  • The first archbishop to whom the whole church of England submitted

  • Chief work is a “Penitential” with directions for moral and religious life, punishments for drunkenness, licentiousness, and other prevalent vices


Bede

  • The first native English scholar, the father of English theology and church history

  • Translated portions of the bible into Anglo-Saxon

  • Contemporary with Caedmon who wrote poetry and brought bible history into the Saxon imagination

    • Bede/Caedmon is a similar pair to Wiclif/Chaucer


English conversion was nominal and ritual rather than intellectual and moral

  • The English became the most devoted to the Pope; they sent more pilgrims to Rome and more money to the papal treasury than any other nation
