1753

French and Natives vs. the British (7 years war)

Troops in Canada are seizing the Ohio Valley(setting up camp). The conflict is over the Ohio Valley. Ohio Valley was essential to trade, money, and economy.

Dinwiddie sends 21-year-old George Washington to warn them.

Ohio Valley is a piece of land that is an opportunity.

They have adapted to becoming reliant on trade- getting weapons, metal tools, cloth, and even rum from European trading partners. Natives lean more toward the side of French.

1754, May-July

The official start of the conflict, the catalyst. Jomavella(French), the Diplomat, is there for resolution. He is killed for wanting to make peace.

In July, there was a battle at Fort Necceisty and they won. The French say they owe their victory to the natives- Guerrilla-style warfare(the use of camouflage through the surrounding terrain, sneaking up upon)

British Patrol led by George Washington, accompanied by Native, the British say the Iroquois murdered Jominvella(they did not know, they were surprised.) They did not know the Iroquois was going to kill him.

George Washington had to surrender at the battle in July.

They feel betrayed by Guerrilla-style warfare, untraditional. They get embarrassed, and George is forced to surrender through a document written in French. He signed a document that said he surrendered and killed Jomavella.

The Iroquois says he killed him because the French broke the land agreement- War has been declared.

They agree they helped the French win with Guerrilla-style warfare. The Iroqoius distance themselves and back out after the battle.

1755

The defeat in July was because of the Natives and guerrilla-style warfare. They have won 2 battles in a row. The French retreat and realize that if they get Native support, it will be a long conflict.

Major General Edward Braddock was defeated and then perished. They are defeated and he is wounded and people believe it is because he deeply dislikes Natives. He said they are forbidden from using guerilla-style warfare- they believe this is why he ends up dead. The battle in September ends in a tie(stalemate), they have an ally Mohawk Chief Hendricks, who is killed. British realized the importance of Native support and did not lose.

They became aware of their influence, the French began to delegate certain posts to Native Leaders.

The Mohawk natives say it is not worth their bloodshed and they step back from helping the British.

1756

Things shifted greatly(world conflict)

Great Britain declared war on France in Europe. Great Britain and the French fight each other all over the world(they want to land). It is very expensive, which is important to taxation without representation.

1757

French victory, capture Fort William Henry. The French come in with Natives, they surround them and give them the choice to surrender or fight- the British surrender.

The French feel they are being blamed for something that didn’t involve them.

They are retreating, they are ambushed by the Natives and massacred. It looks like the French set this up because the Natives were with the French.

The natives are direct and admit to the ambush.

1758 March

Pitt changes colonial policy

We are 100% British subjects, but you are making us feel inferior. William Pitt tries to make a change to help with those feelings(wants to make them feel more equal).

1758 July

British capture Fort Louisburg, tide shifts

France lost their last North American battleship, but they were not very worried because they felt everyone had to lose once(not concerned).

British capture Fort Louisburg, tide shifts. They are extremely excited.

American colonists helped forge this victory. They feel this is their way of proving themselves to the crown- this is their chance to prove they are equal and not inferior.

1758  August

French lost Fort Frotenac, and supplies were in jeopardy(cut off). This loss is going to hurt because of the supply cut-off(food, money, men, extra weapons). It is cut off to the Ohio River and the conflict is over the Ohio Valley.

They are gaining momentum, they have a chance at this war.

The colonists are once again proving they are the reason for the British’s success and that they are an integral part of this win.

1758 - October

The Treaty of Easton was signed with 6 nations. If you help us win, we will stay to the east of the Allegheny mountains, natives will get the rest.

The Turning Point

The French have a feeling of almost certain defeat, they think this is definitely not going to end well.

This is a way to secure the win.

The Iroquois is one of the 6 nations to sign the pack.

The natives do not want to leave the area east of the Allegheny, the treaty says they will leave and head west. There is lots of smallpox and disease, they feel this isolation is a needed part of survival.

The colonists were infuriated by the treaty of Easton, they had every intention and desire of settling west of the Alleghenies. They show anger toward the British.

1758 November

The score is now tied 3-3

French abandoned and burned Fort Duquenese. They feel they need to survive, and they are burning supplies and ammunition.

the British Take Fort Duquense

It could be anyone’s game, but the British are likely because of the Treaty of Easton.

They have taken control of the fort of the Ohio(The Point). They established Fort Pitt. They are feeling very good.

They want peace and the entire conflict to end.

1759 July

French lose Fort Niagra. They feel helpless and are begging their monarch to send supplies, but no help has come. They are the subject of Guerrilla-style warfare. They had no supplies to send anywhere because they were fighting all over the world.

They felt very confident that they would win.

Iroquois helped the British defeat the French.

They feel that by July there is no turning back, they feel they must stay with the British no matter what. They must follow through.

1759 September

French surrendered Quebec, and Montcalm died. They could not believe there was a surprise attack using guerilla-style warfare.

The win is because of guerilla-style warfare. They see this as locking in the win and that this is the end.

Surprise attacks(natives).

The natives are really hoping this is the end.

1760

Conflict in North America comes to an end.

Instead of burning their flag, they folded it and handed it to the British. It is a peaceful resolution.

British win Canada. They felt ecstatic, relieved, and victorious.

They feel there is a sense of relief that there is no more bloodshed and conflict, but they also feel anxious about relocating their lives. They also felt relieved because they did not want to fight for the British, but they were happy because of trade.

1763 February 10th, the  Seven Year’s War ends, and Britain is victorious

They’ve lost almost everything in North America, and they gave up all their land.

The British engaged in a conflict that supplied items in North America, but the Natives made the difference. There was a victory, but they were poor and broke. They are excited but feel the strains of war.

1763 April

Pontiac’s war begins

Chief Pontiac unites many Native nations and tries to drive the British off their land. They want to stay on their land, so they attack. They bring down 8 British forts.

The colonists were happy because the Treaty of Easton was broken and they could settle west.

1763  August

Natives were defeated at the Battle of Bushy Run

There is talk.

Not proven but disputed that they should purposefully trade blankets/items that had been infected with smallpox with the natives.

Many natives died of smallpox, which contributed to their defeat at this battle

The colonists were happy because they could settle in the West.

1763 October 7

The Proclamation of 1763 enacted

King George signed the Proclamation of  1763 which is like the Treaty of Easton.

The British feel like they are done fighting and they should call it a day.

The Natives felt a variety of mixed emotions, they would prefer to be isolated, but they don’t want to get rid of the land.

They are stuck between a rock and a hard place.

They end up relocating in an effort to survive.

The colonists were infuriated and furious.

1764

They have won a war and they have also acquired a billion acres of land, they are poor because war is expensive.

The British subjects are already paying a sugar tax.

American colonists were taxed, and The British Sugar Act was amended to tax the American colonies. They have no problem paying the sugar tax, accept we we were not permitted to vote on it, so, they refuse. They are still angry because of this.

1765

Pontiac’s war ended

The British changed trade policy regarding the Natives, thus ending Pontiac’s war. They provide the natives with access to weapons/rum that the Natives initially wanted, as long as the Natives move west of the Alleghenies.

The Natives feel this is the best-case scenario. They are happy to have access to this kind of trade.

They are still angry because the natives still have access to weapons. They cannot move west of the Alleghenies because the Natives have weapons.Â
