Psychology as a Scientific Discipline
Psychology is scientifically defined as the study of experience (Erleben) and behavior (Verhalten). While psychological inquiry has existed for centuries, it emerged as a formal science in the 19th century by adopting experimental methods. Historically, psychology was often dismissed as "soul lore" (Seelenkunde) or lacked recognition because early theories, notably those by Sigmund Freud, relied heavily on subjective observations rather than objective, data-driven measurement. Modern psychology is characterized by an empirical approach, which requires theories to be verifiable, objective, and methodologically rigorous.
A critical distinction exists between scientific psychology and popular psychology (often called lay psychology or "folk psychology"). Popular psychology consists of theories, advice, or explanations simplified for a broad audience, typically lacking a scientific foundation. Examples include magazine personality tests, self-help books like "Think and Grow Rich," or videos claiming "5 tricks to look more confident instantly." In contrast, scientific psychology is complex, differentiated, and generalizable through empirical research.
Professional roles in this field are often confused but distinct. A Psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in mental disorders and has the authority to prescribe medication. A Psychotherapist is a practitioner with specialized practical training to treat psychological disorders through therapy. A Psychologist holds a university degree in psychology but is not necessarily a therapist or medical doctor. A Neurologist is a medical doctor focused on physical disorders of the brain and nervous system. In practice, many individuals hold dual qualifications (e.g., Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist).
Psychology is applied in various everyday domains. Traffic Psychology involves the design of transport routes and the study of driver perception. Clinical Psychology focuses on the study and treatment of mental illnesses. School Psychology supports students dealing with issues like bullying. Forensic and Criminal Psychology involve creating perpetrator profiles and assessing legal accountability.
The methods utilized in psychology to gather data include systematic observation (conducted according to strict rules), Experiments (manipulating variables to observe effects), Surveys/Interviews (systematic questioning), and psychometric Tests (standardized measurement of traits).
The Human as a Part of a Social Environment
Two seminal experiments define our understanding of social roles and authority. The Stanford Prison Experiment, conducted in 1971 by Philip Zimbardo at Stanford University, aimed to investigate how people adapt to artificial social roles in a captive environment. Zimbardo selected 24 male students, all screened to be psychologically healthy with no criminal records. They were randomly divided into two groups: Guards and Prisoners. The basement of the university was converted into a mock prison. Prisoners were "arrested" at their homes, stripped, and assigned numbers. Guards were given uniforms, batons, and mirrored sunglasses to prevent eye contact.
Though planned for days, the experiment was aborted after only days because it became too extreme. Guards quickly began to abuse their power, inflicting senseless punishments and humiliating the prisoners. Prisoners developed symptoms of anxiety and depression, and some showed pathological obedience. The experiment is ethically controversial due to the extreme psychological stress placed on participants. Key findings suggest that situational factors and authority structures have a massive influence on behavior, often overriding personal morality. However, critics argue the study is not easily replicable and the guards may have been coached to act aggressively, questioning its methodological validity.
The Milgram Experiment, conducted in 1961 by Stanley Milgram, focused on obedience to authority. Participants were told they were part of a learning experiment. There were three roles: the Experimenter (an authority figure in a white lab coat), the Teacher (the actual participant), and the Learner (an actor). When the learner answered questions incorrectly, the teacher was instructed to administer electric shocks ranging from to volts. Despite the learner screaming in pain (simulated), of participants went to the highest level of volts because the authority figure told them, "Please continue," or "The experiment requires that you continue."
These studies show that humans often relinquish personal responsibility when following an authority. Obedience and conformity (joining a group) are natural human tendencies, often peaking during puberty as a desire for belonging. While conformity can lead to faster goal achievement through teamwork, it becomes dangerous when it leads to "blind obedience," where individuals act against their own conscience to avoid punishment or out of respect for an expert's rank.
The Human as an Individual: William Stern and Intelligence
William Stern (–), a German psychologist and philosopher, was a pioneer in Differential Psychology—the study of differences between individuals. He is best known for developing the Intelligence Quotient (IQ). Stern advocated for a holistic view of the person, arguing that a human is an active, unique being, not just a set of statistics or test scores. He used the metaphor of a painting: focusing only on a small patch of blue in the corner (like a single grade or test score) causes one to miss the entire image (the personality).
Intelligence is defined as the ability to make the best possible decision in a situation based on available information. It is often associated with vast knowledge and stems from the Latin "intelligentia," meaning insight or understanding. It is estimated that approximately of intelligence is genetic, while the remaining is influenced by the environment.
Classic models of intelligence include Spearman’s Two-Factor Theory and Thurstone’s Primary Mental Abilities. Spearman proposed a general "g-factor" (general intelligence) and specific "s-factors" for tasks like mathematics or verbal skills. If an individual has a high g-factor, they typically perform well across various cognitive tests. Louis Thurstone challenged this, proposing independent primary factors: Spatial Visualization, Perceptual Speed, Verbal Comprehension, Word Fluency, Number Facility, Memory, and Inductive Reasoning. In Thurstone's view, an individual possesses a unique profile of these specific strengths.
Intelligence Testing, Personality Assessment, and Memory
Intelligence tests are psychometric tools designed to measure cognitive abilities, such as logical thinking and adaptability. These categorized as General tests (measuring the g-factor), Specific tests (measuring sub-abilities like mathematical thinking), or Children's tests (adapted for developmental stages). Creativity is considered a separate but complementary trait to classic intelligence. The goals of these tests include career counseling, diagnosing learning disabilities, and recruitment. However, test results can fluctuate based on the specific day or the individual's state.
Personality diagnostics aim to capture a person's characteristic traits and attitudes. Methods include structured Questionnaires (like the Big Five model), which are objective and comparable, though participants may not always be honest. Projective tests, such as the Rorschach (inkblot) test, attempt to access the unconscious by presenting ambiguous stimuli. Interviews can be structured (fixed questions) or unstructured (free conversation), providing depth but sacrificing comparability.
Emotional Intelligence is the ability to perceive, understand, and manage one's own and others' emotions. Cognitive ability refers to how humans receive, process, store, and apply information.
Memory is the foundation of identity and learning. Neurologically, the brain consists of two hemispheres connected by the Corpus Callosum. The Neocortex is the seat of conscious thought. Key structures include the Hippocampus (critical for transferring info to long-term memory), the Amygdala (emotional evaluation), the Frontal Lobe (working memory, planning), and the Thalamus (relay station for sensory input). Learning changes the brain's structure by creating new synapses—a principle known as "use it or lose it."
Memory is modeled in three stages:
- Ultra-short-term (Sensory) memory: Duration of milliseconds; acts as a filter.
- Short-term memory: Duration of seconds; limited capacity for conscious processing. This includes Working Memory (comparable to a computer's RAM).
- Long-term memory: Duration ranges from minutes to a lifetime; involves permanent storage.
Forms of Long-Term Memory and Learning Theories
Long-term memory is categorized into four forms:
- Episodic Memory: Conscious recall of personal experiences (e.g., the first day of school).
- Semantic Memory: Conscious recall of facts and vocabulary (e.g., Rome is the capital of Italy).
- Procedural Memory: Unconscious recall of motor skills (e.g., riding a bike).
- Priming: Unconscious patterns triggered by previous stimuli (e.g., associations used in advertising).
Learning takes two forms: Implicit (unconscious, like a child learning a language) and Explicit (intentional, like memorizing vocabulary). Filter mechanisms in the brain focus on relevant content with personal significance. However, learning can be hindered by various inhibitions. Retroactive inhibition occurs when new knowledge interferes with old knowledge. Echphoric inhibition happens when emotional arousal (like exam nerves) prevents recall. Affective inhibition is where stress, anger, or panic block learning. Lingual inhibition is the "tip of the tongue" phenomenon.
Behaviorist learning theories include Classical Conditioning, where a neutral stimulus is paired with an unconditioned stimulus to produce a response. Ivan Pavlov’s dogs associated a bell with food until the bell alone caused salivation. In the film "A Clockwork Orange," this theory is shown through "Aversion Therapy," where a violent youth is conditioned to feel nausea when exposed to violence. Operant Conditioning focuses on learning through consequences (reward and punishment).
Wolfgang Khler (1917) expanded on this with Kognitivism, observing chimpanzees. He found that animals solve problems through "Insight" (Aha-moments)—suddenly recognizing the relationship between objects (like using a stick to reach a banana) rather than just trial and error.
Communication and Nonviolent Communication (GFK)
Communication is the exchange of information, thoughts, and feelings through language, gestures, and behavior. One cannot not communicate. Barriers to communication include neurological conditions (aphasia, dementia), psychological blocks (social anxiety, trauma), or lack of shared language. This can lead to isolation or conflict.
Three models illustrate communication:
- Sender-Receiver Model: A flow of information from sender to receiver via a channel (speech, writing). It is structured but ignores emotions and relationships.
- Four-Ohren-Model (Friedmann Schulz von Thun): Every message has four layers: Factual (the data), Self-disclosure (what I say about myself), Relationship (how I feel about you), and Appeal (what I want you to do). Misunderstandings occur when the sender and receiver focus on different layers.
- Nonviolent Communication (GFK) by Marshall Rosenberg: A model designed for appreciative, empathetic exchange. It consists of four steps:
- Observation: Describe what is happening without judgment (e.g., "The trash hasn't been taken out").
- Feeling: State the emotion (e.g., "I feel overwhelmed").
- Need: Identify the underlying need (e.g., "I need support with housework").
- Request: Make a concrete, positive request (e.g., "Can you take the trash out today?").
Body Language and Advertising Psychology
Body language often conveys our true feelings unconsciously. It includes posture (open vs. closed), smiling (friendliness vs. nervousness), and eye contact (interest vs. deception). Specific signals include "Adapters" (self-soothing gestures), "Illustrators" (hand movements), and "Regulators" (gestures to control conversation flow). If body language matches speech, it is "congruent"; if not, it is "incongruent."
Perception of others is rarely objective. The first impression is vital. Selective Perception involves focusing only on what we choose to see. The Halo Effect occurs when one single trait (like attractiveness) colors our entire perception of a person’s character.
Advertising Psychology examines how ads influence consumer perception and behavior. Historically, advertising moved from information-oriented local signs to mass media (TV/Radio) and now to digitalization (social media, influencer marketing). Modern advertising leverages the fact that emotions are stronger than facts. High-involved purchases (like a car) involve more deliberation, while low-involved purchases (like a t-shirt) are impulsive. Strategies include the KISS-Principle (Keep It Short and Simple), the Attention Principle, and the "Klotzen-nicht-kleckern-Prinzip" (Go big or go home).
Mental Disorders
Mental disorders are medically recognized impairments in thinking, feeling, or behavior that significantly impact daily life. A reaction is "normal" if it is a proportional response to a stressful event (e.g., grief at a funeral), but it becomes a disorder if symptoms persist and impair relationships or work.
Major categories include:
- Affective Disorders: Depression and Bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder involves swings between Depressive phases and Manic phases (excessive energy, self-overestimation). Depression forms include Major Depression, Dysthymia (chronic), and Seasonal (Winter) depression. Symptoms must last at least weeks.
- Anxiety Disorders: Specific Phobias (fear of spiders/heights) vs. Generalized Anxiety (constant daily worry). Panics attacks are the most severe form.
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Inner compulsions to perform repetitive acts (cleaning or checking) to soothe anxiety.
- Developmental Disorders: Asperger’s Syndrome (Autism), which begins in early childhood. Characteristics include difficulties with social empathy and sensory sensitivity, but may include "Savant Syndrome" (extraordinary abilities in specific areas like music or math).
- Personality Disorders: Borderline Personality Disorder involves extreme emotional instability, impulsivity, and a fragmented self-image.
Work Psychology, Stress, and Conformity
Stress is defined as a reaction to demanding requirements. Eustress is positive, motivating stress that increases efficiency, while Distress is negative and health-damaging over time. The Yerkes-Dodson Law suggests that performance increases with arousal up to a certain point, after which it declines. Stressors include environmental factors (noise), daily hassles (household chores), or critical life events (divorce). Burnout is a syndrome resulting from unmanaged workplace stress.
Conformity in the workplace is the adaptation of behavior to group norms to secure career advantages or avoid conflict. Types include Behavior conformity (dress code), Opinion conformity (agreeing in meetings), Performance conformity (holding back ideas), and Emotional conformity (suppressing feelings to look professional). While conformity aids team cohesion, excessive conformity leads to a loss of innovation and "Groupthink."
Macht (Power) in organizations stems from various sources:
- Legitimate Power: From one's formal position (the boss).
- Reward Power: Control over bonuses or promotions.
- Coercive Power: Threat of dismissal or criticism.
- Expert Power: Based on specialized knowledge.
Manipulation in the workplace includes Gaslighting (making employees doubt their perception) or creating guilt ("You're letting the team down"). Psychological health at the workplace is maintained through work-life balance, clear communication, and a culture of feedback and appreciation.
