APES Unit 3 Summary

  • R-selected species: mature quickly, usually smaller animals, little to no parental care, and have many offspring at a time (examples: fish, frogs)

  • K-selected species: larger animals, mature slowly, have high levels of parental care, and have a few offspring at a time (examples: elephants, humans)

  • Biotic potential: maximum reproduction rate of an organism in optimal conditions

  • Limiting resources: things like food, water, and land that limit how many organisms can survive in a given environment

  • Carrying capacity: the number of organisms an ecosystem can support

  • Density-dependent limiting factors: disease, amount of food and land, etc

  • Density-independent limiting factors: natural disasters, habitat loss, etc

  • Age structure diagrams: graphs that visualize the number of individuals in one age range

  • Percent Growth Rate equation: (CBR-CDR)10
