Notes on Muscle Structure and Myosin Function

Muscle Structure at the Cellular Level

  • Myosin (Thick Filament)
    • Composed of elongated myosin molecules shaped like golf clubs.
    • Structure Details:
    • Rod Portion: Lies parallel to the myosin molecule.
    • Myosin Heads: Two structures that extend laterally (stick out to the side).
Functions of Myosin Heads:
  1. Cross-Bridge Formation:

    • Myosin heads bind to the active site on actin, forming a cross-bridge which is crucial for muscle contraction.
  2. Contraction Mechanism:

    • Myosin heads are attached to the rod via a hinge region, allowing bending and straightening during muscle contraction.
  3. Energy Release:

    • Myosin heads have the ability to break down ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which releases energy necessary for muscle contraction activities.
