Notes on Muscle Structure and Myosin Function
Muscle Structure at the Cellular Level
- Myosin (Thick Filament)
- Composed of elongated myosin molecules shaped like golf clubs.
- Structure Details:
- Rod Portion: Lies parallel to the myosin molecule.
- Myosin Heads: Two structures that extend laterally (stick out to the side).
Functions of Myosin Heads:
Cross-Bridge Formation:
- Myosin heads bind to the active site on actin, forming a cross-bridge which is crucial for muscle contraction.
Contraction Mechanism:
- Myosin heads are attached to the rod via a hinge region, allowing bending and straightening during muscle contraction.
Energy Release:
- Myosin heads have the ability to break down ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which releases energy necessary for muscle contraction activities.
