The Impact of the Self on Memory and Perception

  • The Self as a Lens: A central theme in social psychology is that memory and perception of the world are heavily influenced by the self-concept. The self-concept acts as a filter or a strategy for relating to information.

  • The Self-Reference Effect: This effect occurs when individuals encounter information relevant to themselves. Such information is processed differently and usually remembered better than non-self-relevant information.

    • Categorical Processing: Information related to the self is often well-organized in memory. This is because people spend significant time thinking about who they are (e.g., for dating profiles, job applications, or general self-reflection). Because the information is already structured, new self-related information is easier to integrate and recall.

    • Elaborative Processing: When relating information to the self, individuals think about it at a deeper level. For example, deciding if a trait like "aggressive" or "athletic" describes you requires evaluating the meaning of the word and recalling specific life instances where that trait was displayed. This contrasts with simple tasks like judging if a word is long or short, which requires no deep semantic processing.

  • Attention and the Self: The self-concept also dictates environmental attention.

    • The Cocktail Party Effect: Even in a noisy room where a person is focused on one conversation, they will immediately orient toward their own name if it is spoken elsewhere. This suggests a subconscious mechanism is constantly scanning the environment for self-relevant cues.

Defining and Measuring the Self-Concept

  • The ABCs of the Self: Social psychologists break the study of the self into three components:

    • A (Affective): How we feel about ourselves and how we evaluate ourselves (e.g., self-esteem).

    • B (Behavioral): How we behave to manipulate or change the perceptions others have of us (e.g., acting punctual in a job interview versus relaxed with friends).

    • C (Cognitive): How we think about ourselves and how we form a self-concept.

  • Self-Concept Definition: The sum total of everything an individual thinks about themselves. If one were to list response to "I am [blank]" to infinity, that sum total would be the self-concept.

  • Operationalizing the Self-Concept: Psychologists use the "Mirror Test" to determine if a being possesses a self-concept.

    • The Procedure: A mark (e.g., ink) is secretly placed on the subject's forehead. The subject is then placed in front of a mirror.

    • Recognition: If the subject touches the mark on their own forehead rather than the mirror, it indicates they recognize the image as their own reflection.

    • Developmental and Species Milestones:

      • Human children typically pass this test at around 1824months18-24\,months of age.

      • Few animals pass this test, but notable exceptions include great apes (gorillas, bonobos, orangutans), certain types of elephants, and dolphins.

Cultural and Social Origins of the Self

  • The "I Am…" Exercise: When asked to describe themselves, individuals provide various responses that reveal cultural conditioning.

  • Western Cultures: People from Western cultures primarily define themselves through individual personality traits (e.g., "I am loving," "I am loyal," "I am nice").

    • There is a strong bias toward listing positive traits.

  • Eastern Cultures: People from Eastern cultures are less likely to focus on personality traits and more likely to define themselves via group affiliations and social roles (e.g., "I am a brother," "I am a student at FIU").

  • Social Comparison and Reflected Appraisal: Individuals often learn who they are through the feedback of others (reflected appraisal) or by comparing themselves to those around them (social comparison).

The Limits of Introspection

  • The Core Argument: While people believe they know themselves through introspection, evidence suggests they often only know the outcome of their mental processes, not the processes themselves. People readily generate reasons for their preferences or behaviors, but these reasons are often inaccurate.

  • Evidence of Overemphasizing Factors (The Weather and Mood Study):

    • Participants kept a daily mood journal for two weeks.

    • When asked later, participants claimed the weather (sunny vs. rainy days) significantly influenced their mood.

    • Statistical correlation showed that the weather actually had zero effect on their daily mood reports. They reported what they believed should be true based on common sense.

  • Evidence of Environmental Misattribution (The Power Saw Study):

    • Participants watched a movie in either a silent room or a room with a noisy power saw running next door.

    • Participants in the noisy condition claimed the noise made them like the movie less.

    • In reality, there was no statistical difference in movie ratings between the two groups; in some cases, the noise group liked the movie slightly more.

  • Evidence of Underemphasizing Factors (The Pantyhose/Position Effect Study):

    • Shoppers at a mall evaluated four identical pairs of pantyhose.

    • Participants consistently preferred the pair they touched last (the right-most item).

    • When asked why, participants invented reasons like "better color" or "softer material," even though the items were identical.

    • When researchers asked if the order of the items influenced their choice, participants vehemently denied it, unaware that the position was the primary driver of their preference.

Common Sense vs. True Causes

  • Causal Theories: When people explain their behavior (e.g., why they love their partner or why they chose FIU), they are not using true introspection. Instead, they are utilizing common sense explanations or culturally taught causal theories.

  • Examples of Common Sense Explanations:

    • "I love them because they are kind and help me grow."

    • "I like Pepsi because it is sweeter than Coke."

    • "I chose FIU because of its research programs or location."

  • The Danger of Over-Introspection: Thinking too deeply about the "why" behind preferences can sometimes lead to worse decision-making. Individuals may focus on easily verbalized, "common sense" reasons that don't actually reflect their true underlying feelings, leading them to misjudge their own happiness or satisfaction.
