Procedure

  • 40 us males To take part in research at Yale university

  • Adverts in newspaper to take part in research on memory

  • Paid 4$

  • Each volunteer was introduced to another participant (confederate- mr Wallace)

  • Drew lots to see who would be the teacher and who the learner

  • Draw was fixed so the confederate was always the learner

  • if a learner got an answer wrong the teacher had to shock the learner with an electric shock

  • 12.5% of ps stop here

  • The rest went to 450v

  • Most ps were stressed

Prediction

  • People underestimate obedience

LOW INTERNAL VALIDITY-milgram reported that 75% of his ps thought the shocks were real. Orne and Holland argues that ps didn’t believe this and were play acting
