Restoration

Death - Sacrifice

  • Shows Jesus’ perfect obedience to the will of God countering the disobedience of human sin
  • Acts as a sacrifice (self-sacrifice)
    • “Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world” - John 1:29
    • Refers to animal sacrifice in the OT
  • Opens the way to God for humans
    • Which is why in the gospel, the moment Jesus died the temple curtain ,seperating God’d precense from the people, was torn in 2.

Resurrection - Recreation

  • Physically resurrected
  • Proved that Jesus is the son of god & part of the trinity.
  • Shows power of sin &death was conquered
  • The harmony of creation ,which was destroyed by human sin was restored
    • it is an ongoing process but will be completed in heaven
  • ‘Because death is now no longer the end of everything, joy and hope came into the world.’ (Youcat 108)

Ascension - Cosmic Order

  • Jesus returns to the father
  • Restoring things to how they were ; Jesus goes back to his father
  • Inspires christians to join God in heaven.
  • Jesus promised us the Holy spirit.
  • in Acts 1, the story does not really make sense – it suggests Jesus goes off like a rocket up into the sky, as if heaven is a place skies
  • Not all christians believe that the ascension happened
  • shows that the broken relationship between heaven and earth has been repaired or restored. hence cosmic order.
