THERAPEUTIC CLASSIFICATIONS OF VETERINARY DRUGS
Therapeutic Drug Classifications
Introduction to Therapeutic Drug Classifications
- Drugs are most commonly classified based on their therapeutic use, meaning what condition or disease they are intended to treat.
- This classification generally does not imply the specific form (e.g., tablet, liquid) or route of administration (e.g., oral, injectable) of the medication.
- A single drug can often be available in various forms and administered through different routes.
Key Points for Therapeutic Drug Classifications
- Multiple Uses: Many drugs possess more than one therapeutic use, leading to their inclusion in multiple classification categories.
- Varying Sources: Different sources or reference materials may categorize drugs into different classes.
- Understanding Patient Conditions: Knowledge of a drug's classification provides valuable insight into a patient's condition and helps anticipate the expected effects and outcomes of its administration.
Outline of Veterinary Drug Categories

- (Note: Analgesics will be covered in a separate lecture.)
Anti-infective Drugs
- Definition: Also known as antimicrobials, these substances are used to treat various types of infections.
- Targets of Infection:
- Bacterial infections
- Fungal infections (mycoses)
- Protozoal infections
- Viral infections
- Mechanism of Action: They either destroy (indicated by the suffix −cidal) or inhibit the growth (indicated by the suffix −static) of specific infectious organisms.
- Criteria for Effectiveness: For an anti-infective drug to be effective, it must:
- Reach the site of infection in a sufficient quantity.
- Maintain that sufficient quantity for the entire required duration.
- Failure to meet both criteria can lead to treatment failure or the development of antimicrobial resistance.
Types of Anti-infective Drugs
- Antibiotics / Antibacterial Drugs:
- Specifically target and treat bacterial infections.
- Hundreds of types exist, each effective against a particular group of bacteria.
