Theology
Holy Week (Most Sacred Week in the Church Calendar) Begins the Monday before Easter Sunday.
The prelude to Holy Week is Palm Sunday.
Palm Sunday is when Jesus enters Jerusalem triumphantly on a donkey.
We abstain from meat as a form of sacrifice and penance.
The Easter Triduum is three days before the Resurrection. - Ends on Holy Saturday/Easter Vigil.
Jesus Shares his last meal with the disciples ( the last supper)
The mass is a reenactment of the last supper.
The mass every sunday, the Priest does the same thing Jesus did at the Last Supper. just as Jesus did, the priest breaks the bread and offers it as Jesus’ Body, and he takes the chalice with the wine and offers it as the blood of Christ.
He washes his Disciples feet, to show that he came to serve—not to be served. He calls them to serve others.
Jesus Breaks bread and drinks wine, symbolizing his Body and Blood.
He tells the apostles that one will deny him 3 times before morning, and one will betray him.
He turns to judas and says “Go and do your deed.”
After, Jesus goes to the Garden of Gethsemane with Peter, James, and John to pray.
He prays that “if this cup spills over him, and he accepts his fathers will” His sweat turns to blood.
The Garden of Gethsemane is located in the Mount of Olives.
The apostles fall asleep, and jesus soon arrives at the Garden with Centurions(Roman Soldiers)
Judas Kisses Jesus on the cheek to identify him and says “Rabbi, Teacher” ,this is because the men all wore hooded cassocks and were bearded.
Peter engages in battle with the centurions, and cuts the ear off of one of them.
Jesus heals and mends the ear back onto centurion, he then tells peter “ Those who live by the Sword, Die by the sword”
The other Apostles scattered and Ran away.
Good Friday:
Jesus is arrested by the Jewish Leadership:
The Jewish Leadership:
The Pharisees
The Saducees/Sanhedrin
High Priest: The high priest at the time is Caiphas.
Jesus was charged with Blasphemy.
During the Jewish passover feast, it was customary of the Roman Procurator ,Pontious Pilate,to show mercy and release one prisoner.
Pilate does not find fault with Jesus, and transfers him to the King of judea, Herod The Great
Herod sends Jesus back to Pilate, claiming that he was out of his jurisdiction.
Pilate sends Jesus to be scourged(whipped), hoping that it will satisfy the crowd.
Although Jesus was ridiculed and hated, Joseph of Arimathea—a Sanhedrin/Saduccee—advocated for him.
Pilate washes his hands (symbolic of washing his hands of the guilt) and gives the crowd a choice of freeing one prisoner to show compassion on the eve of the Jewish Passover.
The crowd selects Barabbas, a notorious criminal,to be released.
Pontious Pilate asks the crowd what they want him to do with Jesus, The Galilean.
They exclaim “Crucify Him!”
Jesus is condemned to death, and Pilate has the authority to impose.
Jesus’ Journey to Golgotha
Golgotha is otherwise known as the Place of the Skull or Calvary.
He is forced to carry his own cross, and falls 3 times. He meets his mother, meets the women of Jersualem.
Veronica wipes his face , The shroud produced by this interaction is known as the Shroud of Turin.
Jesus tells the weeping Women “ Weep not for me , but for your sins and for your children.”
To avoid Jesus’ premature death, they call a stranger from the crowd, Simon of Cyrene, to help Jesus carry the cross.
Jesus is compared to two Old Testament Figures.
Moses—Because like Jesus, Moses’ mission was to deliver the Hebrews from slavery in Egypt and lead us to the promised land. Jesus’ mission was to deliver us from sin and lead us to salvation through his death.
Isaac— Abraham is prepared to sactrifice his only begotten son: God sacrifices his only begotten son. Isaac carries wood for his sacrifice, similarly to how Jesus the cross used for his crucifixion.
Jesus is stripped of his garments, is nailed to the cross, and dies. His body is taken down from the cross.
Whilst on the
, Jesus says 5 things.
“Father, In your hands I commend my Spirit”
“I thirst.”
“My God, My God, Why have you forsaken me?”
“Lord forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”
“It is done”
Before his ascension, Jesus went to hell and opened the gates to heaven.
Upon his resurrection, Mary Magdalene along with other woman visited the grave provided by Joseph of Arimathea .
Jesus tells her “ Why are you looking for the living among the dead?” and tells her to tell the others.
During the Easter Vigil/Holy Saturday Mass, There are three major parts.
The Service of Light: Represents the fact that Jesus is the light of the world.
The Liturgy of the Word
Liturgy of Baptism
Liturgy of the Eucharist
