Word Formation through Derivation
Derivation is a fundamental linguistic process that consists of the formation of new words, known as derived words, from words that already exist in the language, which are referred to as primitive words. This process relies on the manipulation of the radical, the core part of the word that carries the primary meaning, through the addition of affixes. These affixes can significantly alter the meaning or grammatical function of the word depending on their placement and the specific rules of the derivation type being employed.
Types of Derivation: Prefixal and Suffixal
Prefixal derivation involves the addition of a prefix to a radical. A prefix is an affix placed before the radical to modify its original meaning. For instance, the word infiel is formed by taking the radical fiel and adding the prefix in-. In this structure, the prefix in- serves as a negatory element, effectively creating the derived word infiel.
Suffixal derivation occurs through the addition of a suffix to a radical. A suffix is an affix placed after the radical. This addition often changes the grammatical class of the word or adds a specific nuance to its meaning. An example of this is the word felizmente, where the radical feliz is joined by the suffix -mente to form an adverb.
Complex Derivation: Prefixal/Suffixal vs Parasynthesis
Prefixal and Suffixal derivation can occur simultaneously, where both a prefix and a suffix are added to a radical. In this specific category, the removal of either the prefix or the suffix does not cause the word to lose its meaning. For example, in the word infelizmente, which consists of the prefix in-, the radical feliz, and the suffix mente, removing the prefix leaves felizmente, and removing the suffix leaves infeliz. Both resulting words are semantically valid in the language.
Parasynthetic derivation (Parassintética) also involves the simultaneous addition of a prefix and a suffix to a radical. However, it differs significantly from the prefixal and suffixal combination in that the prefix and suffix are interdependent. If one of these elements is removed, the remaining word loses all sense and is no longer valid. A concrete example of this is the word entardecer. It is formed by the prefix en-, the radical tarde, and the suffix -ecer. If you attempt to remove the prefix, you are left with tardecer, which is not a word; similarly, removing the suffix leaves entarde, which also lacks meaning.
Regressive and Improper Derivation
Regressive derivation occurs when the grammatical class of a word is changed through the reduction of the primitive word's structure. This process is primarily used to form nouns from verbs. An example of this change is found in the transition from the verb chorar to the noun choro. The reduction of the verbal form results in a shorter noun that represents the action.
Improper derivation (Imprópria) involves a change in the grammatical class of a primitive word without any alteration to its spelling or form. The word remains identical, but its function within a sentence changes. For instance, the word jantar can be used as a verb (e.g., to eat dinner) or as a noun (e.g., the meal itself, as in o jantar), shifting its grammatical category without modifying a single letter.
Word Formation through Composition
Composition is a method of word formation that occurs when a new word is created by uniting two or more radicals. This can be achieved through two primary methods: juxtaposition and agglutination.
Juxtaposition (Justaposição) happens when there are no alterations to the radicals that are being joined. Each radical retains its original form and phonetic integrity. A classic example is the word passatempo, created by combining passa and tempo without any loss of letters or change in sound.
Agglutination (Aglutinação) occurs when there is a structural or phonetic alteration in at least one of the radicals that merge to form the new word. In many cases, letters are lost or sounds are changed to facilitate the union. Examples include planalto, which is the result of joining plano and alto; vinagre, formed by vinho and acre; and embora, which is a contraction of the phrase em boa hora.
