Sustainable Fisheries

Why Sustainable Fishing Matters

  • Fish = major food source worldwide.

  • In the past: fishing was small-scale → fish populations stayed constant.

  • Now: modern trawler ships can:

    • Stay at sea for weeks

    • Use huge nets + modern tech to locate fish

    • Catch many tons at once

  • Problem: fish stocks falling in many areas.

  • If stocks fall below a certain level → not enough mature fish to breed → stocks collapse → commercial fishing impossible.

Strategies to Maintain Fish Stocks

  1. Fishing Quotas

    • Strict limits on number of fish caught per species.

    • Reduces catch → allows fish to breed and repopulate.

  2. Minimum Net Sizes

    • Nets must be large enough to let immature (young) fish escape.

    • These can then grow, reproduce, and restore population.

Evidence That It Works

  • North Sea Cod:

    • 1970s–80s → stocks fell sharply.

    • Introduction of quotas + net size rules → population is now recovering to sustainable levels.

Key Point: Sustainable fishing ensures that fish stocks remain stable long-term, preventing collapse and protecting an essential food source.
