Dutch grammar
Subject and verb always together (Ik werk)
If you wanna add, you either add details, before or after (Ik werk in Amsterdam)
If you wanna add more details: Subject- Verb- Time- Misc.- Place
“Ik werk morgen in Amsterdam”
I’ll be working in Amsterdam tomorrow
“Ik werk morgen misschien in Amsterdam”
“Maybe I’ll be working in Amsterdam tomorrow”
If you have 2 verbs, the 2nd verb is at the end
“I want to sleep in my own bed tonight” - want and sleep are both verbs
“Ik wil vanavond in mijn eigen bed slapen”
Object and time
If an object is specific, it goes before time
'“Ik zag mijn vriend gisteren op de market”
“I saw my friend yesterday at the market”
If an object is unspecific, it goes after time
“Ik zag gisteren een vriend op de market”
“I saw a friend yesterday at the market”
“Ik kijk die film ieder jaar” - I see that film every year
so actually, Subject- Verb- *SPEC.object* - Time- *UNSPEC.object* - Misc.- Place
With object A and B being the options for it’s placement (not both at once) based on the specificity of the object
Commands - When giving a command, the action word’s at the end
Laat hem het boek lezen! - let him read the book!
Longer sentences with 'that'
Hij zegt dat hij een boek leest - he says that he reads a book
