What’s your take on assisted suicide?
"I understand that assisted suicide is a deeply divisive and personal issue that touches on core ethical, legal, and emotional considerations. I believe that assisted suicide is an incredibly complex issue that involves deeply personal, ethical, legal, and medical considerations. It's not something that can be easily reduced to a yes or no answer, and I recognize that individuals, healthcare providers, and society may have different views depending on cultural, religious, and moral beliefs. At the heart of the debate are the principles of autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice. While I respect the right of an individual to make decisions about their own life and death, I also believe it is our responsibility as healthcare providers to ensure that patients are making informed choices and are not acting out of coercion or desperation. Key ethical principles like capacity, confidentiality, and consent are critical in these discussions. First, the patient’s capacity to make such an important decision must be thoroughly assessed to ensure they fully understand the consequences. Secondly, confidentiality plays a crucial role—patients must be able to discuss their thoughts openly with their healthcare providers without fear of judgment or breach of privacy. Lastly, informed consent is paramount. The patient must voluntarily and knowingly agree to the procedure after being made fully aware of all available options, including palliative care and the implications of their choice. While I understand the complexity of the issue, I believe that these ethical principles guide a compassionate and responsible approach to assisted suicide."
If assisted suicide is legal and carried out within strict regulatory frameworks, it could be a compassionate option for patients suffering from terminal illness and unmanageable pain. However, I think it is always important to explore all other options, particularly in the form of palliative care, before making any decisions. If it was solely up to me, I would push for all other options to be explored first as I believe everyone is valued and life is sacred. But as a healthcare provider, my focus would be on providing the patient with the best possible care and support to ensure that they are making an informed decision that aligns with their values and preferences. Ultimately, my role is to respect their wishes while also offering alternatives that may help alleviate their suffering."
