Overview

  • Gastric parietal (oxyntic) cells are responsible for secreting isotonic hydrochloric acid.

Regulation of Gastric Acid Secretion

  1. Stimuli

    • Gastrin: Secreted by endocrine cells in the gastric antrum and duodenum.

    • Acetylcholine

    • Histamine

Clinical Relevance

  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome:

    • An uncommon disorder caused by a gastrin-secreting adenoma.

    • Associated with severe peptic ulcer disease.
